1. How is this different from your other stiff meshes?

This is the polyester workhorse in the stiff mesh range. At 50gsm, it's heavier than our 28gsm and 29gsm polyester stiff meshes, so it holds its shape with more authority. It's lighter than our 85gsm nylon stiff square mesh, so it's easier to handle for most projects. If the lighter ones aren't giving you enough structure and the 85gsm is overkill, this is your sweet spot.

2. Is this the same as your nylon stiff square mesh, just in polyester?

Different fiber, different feel. Nylon has a slightly softer hand and a bit of natural sheen. Polyester is drier, crispier, and holds a crease more cleanly. Both are stiff square meshes. If you want a slightly softer feel with a hint of shine, go nylon. If you want a clean, crisp, matte finish that holds sharp folds, go polyester.

3. Can this really be used for shoes? What part?

Yes. The stiffness and breathability make it useful for several shoe components: upper support layers sandwiched between the outer fabric and lining to keep the toe box or heel from collapsing, insole reinforcement for added structure, or breathable lining where you need airflow without sacrificing shape. It's not the main shoe fabric — it's the hidden skeleton that keeps everything standing.

4. Is it scratchy? Can it be worn next to skin?

It's not scratchy, but it's not a next-to-skin fabric. The hand feel is firm and crisp — fine for veils, headpieces, and structural layers. If your design puts this directly against the body, add a lining. This mesh is here to hold the shape, not to feel soft.

5. Can I dye or paint this for costume work?

Yes. Polyester takes dye well, and the square grid gives you an even surface for painting or spraying. A lot of costume and prop makers use stiff mesh as a base for painted armor pieces or structured headpieces. Test on a scrap first to get the color absorption right. For spray painting, light coats work better than one heavy pass.
