40D Polyester Base Fabric 40gsm — Smooth Crisp Interlining for Garments and Embroidery | 63 Inch

40gsm polyester base fabric. Heavier than our 22gsm version — you feel the difference the moment you pick it up. Smooth, with a natural crispness that gives it more body. 63 inches wide. Use it for garment linings, interlinings, embroidery backing. The stuff that sits quietly inside a garment and does its job. Doesn't steal the show, but holds its own.

How does it feel?

40gsm polyester base fabric. You pick it up and you feel the difference from our lighter weights — more body, more substance. Smooth to the touch, not slippery. It's got a natural crispness that keeps its shape without being stiff. 63 inches wide. Not sheer like our 22gsm version — this one covers. If you need a lining that feels like something rather than nothing, this is it.

Is it tough? Does it last?

Polyester, so it's low-maintenance. Won't shrink, won't wrinkle much, won't lose its shape in the wash. Cuts cleanly without fraying, sews without bunching. For linings and interlinings that need to survive regular wear and washing, it holds up without complaint.

What can I make with it?

Garment linings that need more body than ultralight options. Interlinings for jackets, vests, structured pieces. Embroidery backing where you need stability. Anything that needs a smooth, reliable base fabric that does its job and stays out of the way.

FAQ

1. How is this different from your 22gsm polyester base fabric?

Weight and coverage. The 22gsm is lighter, sheerer, better for delicate linings where you want the fabric to disappear. This 40gsm version has more body — better for structured pieces, jackets, and applications where you need the lining to hold its own shape. Same smooth hand feel, just more of it.

2. Is this see-through? Do I need a lining under it?

At 40gsm, it gives decent coverage on its own. For most garment linings, it won't show through. If you're using it under a very light or white outer fabric, go with a lighter shade of this fabric to be safe. But for most applications, it covers well without needing an extra layer.

3. Can I use this for machine embroidery backing?

Yes. The extra weight over our 22gsm version gives it more stability on the hoop. Needles pass through smoothly without snagging. For embroidery that needs a sturdier base than our ultralight options, this one works well. Tears away clean after stitching.

4. Is this fabric suitable for medical or healthcare applications?

No. Our fabrics are designed and produced for apparel, linings, interlinings, embroidery backing, and craft uses. We do not currently manufacture or supply fabrics for medical, filtration, or industrial applications. If you need medical-grade textiles, we recommend consulting a specialist supplier.
