Why Recycled Polyester and Recycled Nylon Are Taking Over — And What It Means for Your Supply Chain

At our Fuzhou facility, we've been tracking one question that keeps coming up from customers across North America and Europe: "Can you do this in recycled?"

It used to be a nice-to-have. Now it's becoming a requirement. And the numbers explain why.

The Numbers Behind the Shift

In 2024, global fiber production hit 132 million tonnes. Recycled fibers accounted for 7.6% of that — roughly 9.95 million tonnes. Of that, recycled polyester made up 9.32 million tonnes, representing 11.9% of all polyester produced worldwide. China alone produced about 5.77 million tonnes of recycled polyester in 2024 — 61.9% of the global total.

The global recycled synthetic fiber market is projected to grow from USD 9.6 billion in 2024 to USD 13.9 billion by 2031 (CAGR 6.5%). The recycled polyester market alone — valued at approximately USD 16.27 billion in 2025 — is projected to reach USD 31.33 billion by 2035 at a 6.77% CAGR. Meanwhile, the nylon recycling market is expected to grow from USD 785 million in 2025 to USD 1.35 billion by 2030, at an 11.2% CAGR. These numbers tell a clear story: demand is outpacing supply, and the gap is widening.

How It's Made: A Quick Look at Recycling Methods

Recycled polyester and nylon are produced through two main processes:

  • Mechanical Recycling: The most widely adopted method — cost-effective and currently dominant in the industry. Post-consumer PET bottles or textile waste are collected, cleaned, and mechanically processed into recycled fibers. Around 70% of recycled polyester currently comes from PET bottle waste.
  • Chemical Recycling: A newer approach that breaks down polymers to the molecular level before re-polymerizing them. This yields higher purity and quality, enabling true closed-loop recycling — turning old textiles back into new textiles without downgrading performance. Chemical recycling now accounts for 30-35% of the nylon recycling market share, growing at 12-14% CAGR.

The distinction matters because brands increasingly want to know not just that the fabric is recycled — but how it was recycled, and whether the process supports a genuinely circular supply chain.

Who's Driving the Demand

This isn't just a regulatory story. Brands are pushing the shift forward.

Prada's Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND capsule collection (2026) uses ECONYL® regenerated nylon made from discarded fishing nets and textile waste — with full blockchain traceability via embedded NFC chips so customers can verify the fiber's origin themselves. Lululemon signed a 10-year offtake agreement with Samsara Eco, with the potential to cover 20% of its total fiber portfolio with enzymatically recycled nylon 6,6 and polyester by 2030. Italian swimwear brand Arena debuted a collection crafted from recycled nylon and bio-based spandex, pairing performance with sustainability without compromise.

These aren't experimental pilots. They're production-scale commitments. And they're reshaping what fabric buyers expect from their suppliers.

What's Driving the Market

Three forces are converging:

  • Regulation. The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) introduces mandatory recycled content requirements, a ban on the destruction of unsold apparel (effective July 2026 for large companies), and mandatory EPR schemes for textiles. In the US, California's textile recycling bill and federal sustainability initiatives are tightening requirements on brands.
  • Brand Commitments. Nike has publicly committed to 50% recycled material use across its product range. Patagonia already uses recycled materials in over 90% of its outdoor apparel. LVMH, H&M Group, and many others have set binding recycled content targets — and they're pushing these requirements upstream to their fabric suppliers.
  • Consumer Expectations. Over 72% of global consumers say they're willing to pay a premium for sustainable products. Among Gen Z shoppers, that number is even higher. This isn't a niche preference anymore — it's mainstream purchasing behavior that affects buying decisions across price points.

We're also tightening our own supply chain practices — working with GRS-certified yarn suppliers, documenting batch-level traceability data, and collaborating with upstream partners to align on environmental standards throughout production.

What Comes Next

We're not claiming to have solved everything. But here's where things are heading:

  • Chemical recycling is scaling up fast. New enzyme-based technologies — like the ones being deployed by companies such as Samsara Eco — are making it possible to recycle nylon and polyester back to virgin-quality monomers. This means end-of-life textiles can re-enter the supply chain without performance loss.
  • Application share in apparel is climbing — from roughly 15% of total recycled fiber usage in 2025 to a projected 30% by 2028 — as brands move beyond using recycled fibers only in basics and into performance and fashion categories.
  • The US market is catching up to Europe, driven by federal and state-level sustainability mandates and growing demand for sustainable activewear and outdoor fabrics.
  • China's recycled fiber industry continues to consolidate its position. With 61.9% of global recycled polyester output and major investments in chemical recycling technologies, Chinese manufacturers are well-positioned to meet tightening global requirements.

That said, challenges remain. Traceability standards across the recycled fiber supply chain are still evolving. Chemical recycling costs are higher than mechanical — for now. Certification paperwork can feel like a full-time job. But the direction is clear: recycled content is no longer optional for brands selling into Western markets, and the suppliers who invest in traceability, certification, and consistent quality now will be the ones brands call first.
